Most penetrant testing specifications go into great detail about how to control the penetrant materials, the equipment and the process, but some say little about how to control pre-penetrant etching. This paper is limited to how we measure etch rate at our particular business: perhaps some of the questions brought up herein will inspire others to write about some of their own etching control methods. Important equations are discussed in the body of the paper, with their derivations given in the appendices.
