In-Process Monitoring of Porosity in Aluminum Alloy Weldment by Spectroscopy

Porosity in welds has been one of the major concerns in the welding and joining of aluminum alloy in manufacturing. In most cases porosity can be avoided by closely following known manufacturing practices (for example, proper cleaning) to eliminate the introduction of hydrogen in the process. However, due to unforeseen variations in materials and conditions, porosity does occur from time to time. Results from an investigation aimed at developing a technique to monitor porosity formation in circumferential butt weld of aluminum alloy UNS A96061 (6061-T6) pipes are presented.
