Two Innovative Applications of Phased Array Ultrasonics for Boiler Tube Assessment

This paper presents the potential of phased array ultrasonic inspection in the field of boiler condition assessment. Two examples are discussed, the full length tubing wall thickness inspection and the use of ultrasound in lieu of radiography for the condition assessment of boiler tube welds. Both applications are described with a focus on the advantages of ultrasonic phased array ultrasonic inspection over conventional methods. Especially in the case of the ASME code case 2235 “UT in Lieu of RT” where the radiographic inspection is now allowed to be replaced by ultrasonic inspection, a considerable amount of time can be gained during boiler inspections by using phased array ultrasonics. For both applications, functional prototype systems are presented.
