In parallel with the detailed design of the strengthening solution, it was decided to undertake a study into the structure specific fatigue performance of cast iron and, in particular, the cast iron rail deck cross girders. In order to do this, it was proposed to extract and remove three cross girders from an untrafficked area of the bridge for full scale testing.
