Reliability in High-volume Manufacturing — An Automotive Perspective

The United States Automotive Materials Partnership (USAMP), composed of DaimlerChrysler Corporation, Ford Motor Company and General Motors Corporation, issued a report in February of this year that calls for increased development and application of nondestructive evaluation tools in the automotive industry to reduce waste, save money and energy, and help accelerate the introduction of new materials, processes and vehicle technologies. The major findings of the report are summarized here, along with examples from a collaborative project focused on ultrasonic phased-array inspection of spot welds that illustrate how research and development are being used to help meet the challenges posed by high-volume manufacturing.
