Ultrasonic Detection of Delaminations in Composite Sandwich Panels Having Attenuation

Material attenuation is incorporated into a one dimensional wave propagation model of a polymeric composite sandwich panel via a d’Alembert traveling wave analysis to obtain exact solutions for any input waveform. Numerical results for a three layer sandwich panel subjected to a rectangular pulse indicate that the first wave packet reflected from the bottom surface of the core to the top surface is a key for detecting delamination of the lower face sheet. Delamination of the upper face sheet is also easily detectable.
