The Department of Defense has reported that corrosion is the number one contribution to life cycle costs of military assets. The estimated annual cost of corrosion on military system and infrastructure assets is reported to be $20 billion (US Accounting Office, 2003). In addition, corrosion can have an affect on mission readiness, safety and soldier morale. Emerging technologies in the early detection of the onset of corrosion can help reduce the cost of corrosion by ensuring that corrosion mitigation treatments are applied before serious damage occurs.
