An exceedingly important historical artifact and an extremely fragile one, the H.L. Hunley was subject to intense nondestructive testing (NDT) before any attempt was made to gain access to the interior of the sub. Computed radiography, in particular, was used extensively, as were various imaging systems involving ultrasound, lasers and sophisticated computer modeling systems.
