Boeing has qualified helium mass spectrometer sniffing leak detection as an alternative to the ammonia/phenolphthalein leak detection system. Inline manufacturing and other process optimizations are now possible using inert helium. Finally, helium mass spectrometer leak testing is being implemented as an NDT method requiring Level I certification per the company’s written practice.
