Bridges are continuously deteriorating over time due to the increase in the traffic load and volume, father to the environmental factors affecting them. This requires a continuous screening of their structural health to ensure the safety of the transportation network they serve. Conventional Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) techniques require in site instrumentations which limit the approach feasibility. Recently, researchers have investigated shifting the instrumentation from the bridge body to an inspection truck pass on the bridge, this technique is known as ‘drive-by bridge inspection.’ This study investigates a new method in this filed by using an inspection truck equipped with accelerometers at its axes to determine the deterioration of the structural integrity of the bridge. The paper uses the change in the bridge displacement due to structural damages as a damage index. The change in the bridge displacement will be computed using measurements only from the passing vehicle. The bridge is represented as 1D beam model, and a 2D plate model. The study uses a half car model to simulate the instrumented truck. Damage is represented as local loss in structural stiffness. The solution for the Vehicle Bridge Interaction is performed using the LS-Dyna FEA program.
