Microstructural Characterization of a Welded Joint Using EMAT and Immersion UT Techniques

Flaw detection is the most common industrial application for UT NDT/NDE testing. Recently, the characterization of different microstructural factors including but not limited to grain size, grain boundary segregation, coarse and fine precipitates, type of microstructure and local chemical segregation is also becoming feasible by the use of these UT techniques. The development of new piezoelectric composite ultrasonic transducers makes possible the detection of microstructural features in engineering materials. In the present study, EMAT (Electro-Magnetic Acoustic Transducers and Immersion UT techniques were used to assess the microstructural changes and soundness of a weld-joint. The NDT/NDE results were supported by microhardness testing and advanced microstructural techniques, scanning electron microscopy and electron-backscattered diffraction (EBSD) analysis.
