An electromagnetic acoustic transducer for generating the horizontally
polarized ultrasonic shear waves (SH) was developed to measure the
change of acoustic velocity caused by thermal aging of cast duplex stainless
steel. Acoustic velocity increases with the hardening of the materials. In
order to determine the changes of the acoustic velocity due to hardening of
the material, the difference Dt of the time of flight of each SH wave was
measured at the same position between an unaged and an aged test piece by
echo overlap method. The difference Dt of the time of flight of SH waves was
related to the difference of propagation factor k (the change in the mechanical
property of cast duplex stainless steel). Dt/T was found to depend on
the aging effect of cast duplex stainless steel.
