Use of NDE to Evaluate Transverse Cracking Near Reinforced Concrete Pavement Joints

This paper presents an evaluation of Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavement (CRCP) transverse cracking near pavement joints. The nature of this cracking was unusual as transverse cracking is expected to occur at, not nearby, pavement joints. Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) was employed as the primary investigative tool along with Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity (UPV) to characterize the cracking distress. The NDE results, when combined with a review of availa.ble pavement construction drawings, showed that the pavement cracking resulted from an unreinforced plane of weakness created by a single layer of closely-spaced post-installed pavement dowels.
